:-(
People ask about the computers being used for these 3D renders...
The "old" (May 2019) machine:
Dell Aurora Alienware
Windows 10 Pro, 64bit O/S, x65-based CPU
Intel® Core i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz 3.19GHz
48Gb RAM
nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 (7.2 billion transistors!)
GPU with 8Gb of onboard VRAM
This has been a good "workhorse" and it remains
perfectly capable of handling all but 3D work.
The "new" (Jan 2022) machine:
Falcon Talon
Windows 11 Pro
Intel® Core i9-12900K CPU
- 16-core - 2.4GHz to 5.2GHz
Asus ROG Maximus Z690 Hero WiFi Motherboard
nVIDIA EVGA GeForce RTX 3090 (28.3 billion
transistors!) GPU with 24Gb of onboard VRAM
64Gb (4x 16Gb) Memory at 5,200MHz
1200W power-supply
2x 4K (3840 x 2160) ProArt Display monitors
Oculus VR Headset
This [somewhat expensive] machine is a "beast",
perfect for all but the very top-end of 3D rendering.
Medusa (June 2022) :
The model sports about 15x snakes in the hair and uses a layer of ground fog and Depth Of Field.
Due to an nVIDIA driver glitch, even on a new, fast machine, this render timed-out (self-imposed limit of 90,000secs) at 25hrs 1min. It was 90% converged, having achieved 65,800 ray-traced iterations! (Over-rode the normal max of 15,000 iterations.)
Lattice Limbs (June 2022) :
A 13hr 32min ender on a fast machine. 3,084 ray-traced iterations. (A very difficult pose to strike in front of a mirror in "real life"!)
Yoga (June 2022) :
A 1hr 33min ender on a fast machine.
1,351 ray-traced iterations.
Young Lady (July 2022) :
A 1hr 28mins render on a fast machine - 1,527 Iterations.
Down on the Farm (July 2022) :
A mere 5min 30sec render on a fast computer! - 567 Iterations.
Chilling Out 01 (July 2022) :
A 9hr 30mins render on a slower machine - 567 Iterations.
Chilling Out 02 (July 2022) :
Anatomy (July 2022) :
Render time was a mere 1min 15secs on a fast machine. (There was a fair bit of Modelling time, however!)
This was a preliminary test for the Super-Sasha below.
Deep-Sea Super-Sasha (July 2022) :
Render time was 25mins on a fast machine, for 302 ray-traced iterations.
This is one of a number of "Super-Sasha" renders created, by request, to accompany "The Adventures of Super-Sasha", a series of short stories about a young lady who has "super powers" that allow her body to morph into almost any shape she can imagine.
These models present quite a challenge, 3D-wise, as the figure shapes don't conform to "normality". Similarly, clothing tends not to fit to the distorted figures.
Mermaid in Mirror (July 2022) :
Prematurely-terminated render experiment, continuing from the Super-Sasha theme.
2.5hrs of rendering time... 363 ray-traced Iterations.
Why is there a mirror on the ocean floor?
Good question!
--------------
Mermaid in Mirror #2 (July 2022) :
Almost the same as above, but with a few mods, and permitted to render for 26hrs 12mins (2755 ray-traced iterations), by which time it was still only 92% converged... on a powerful computer! It would likely have still taken several more hours to reach 95%!
Oscarette (July 2022) :
7min 22sec render, 3,036 ray-traced iterations, powerful machine.
The Oskars (July 2022) :
2hrs 14mins render, 3,571 ray-traced iterations, powerful machine.
A Touch of Midas (July 2022) :
15min render, 2,577 ray-traced iterations, powerful machine.
Red Bikini (July 2022) :
5min 32sec render, 429 ray-traced iterations, powerful machine.
...
Griffin Statue (August 2022) :
A 6min 30sec render on a fast machine... 869 ray-traced iterations.
Zodiacs and Incunabulus
(August 2022) :An 8hrs 42mins render on a fast machine... 6,365 ray-traced iterations.
Shark-Woman (August 2022) :
A 17.5min render on a fast machine... 1,405 ray-traced iterations.
Shark-Crow 01 (August 2022) :
A 3min 30sec render on a fast machine... 189 ray-traced iterations.
Shark-Crow 02 (August 2022) :
A 3mins 33secs render on a fast machine... 189 ray-traced iterations.
Smoke Gets in your Eyes 01
(August 2022) :
A 2hrs 1min render on a fast machine... 1,180 ray-traced iterations.
Smoke Gets in your Eyes 02
(August 2022) :
A 2hrs 30min render on a fast machine... 1,399 ray-traced iterations.
Holey Moley! (August 2022) :
2x 3mins 24secs renders, each of 713 ray-traced iterations.
(The 3D software has certain limitations in terms of subtractive geometry and dForce Hair, so the mole had to be rendered twice and the two renders combined to create the final image.)
Please Do Not Eat The Humans!
(August 2022) :
Due to the fog in the scene, this render reached its maximum number of ray-traced iterations (15,000) after 16 hours and 1 minute, and was still only 25% converged! (On a powerful machine!)
Party Girls (August 2022) :
This render took 7hrs 44mins to process 4,170 ray-traced iterations on a fast machine.
Party Girls (August 2022) :
This render took 12hrs and 1min to process 372 ray-traced iterations on an old Dell machine.
My Kingdon for a Sock
(August 2022) :
A 7hrs 17min render on a fast machine... 3,510 ray-traced iterations.
(An earlier version of the same scene, minus the clutter of clothes, shoes, laundry-bag, etc., timed-out after 25hrs 3mins, still only 92% converged!)
65th Birthday Card
(September 2022) :
The render itself only took 15mins 10secs on a fast machine (449 ray-traced iterations), but creating the 3D lettering was time-consuming. And there was a little Photoshop post-work to add the faces.
Swiss Army Wife
(September 2022) :
Again, the render itself only took 16mins 27secs on a fast machine (390 ray-traced iterations), but creating the red 3D handle was fiddly and time-consuming. Again, there was a little Photoshop post-work required to move the "rivets" and darken the red in the shield.
The original had shadows on a white background, but the black is more striking.
Mirrored Photographer
(September 2022) :
This render took 25mins 43secs (2,084 ray-traced iterations) on a powerful computer.
Again, the scene-creation work took a lot longer.
Two additional spotlights were used to highlight the mirror and the photographer.
In addition to the LARGE, flat mirror, there are also 36 SMALL, convex mirrors, each of which reflects most of the room in its own unique manner!
It could have used a bit more Depth Of Field, but it was a problematic issue trying to keep the reflected image(s) in focus along with the mirror and mirror-holding figure while making the background(s) out-of-focus!
Also, to give the impression that the photographer is the same size as the figure holding the mirror, the photographer (and camera) had to be resized to 200%, because of the distance between the photographer and mirror effectively being doubled!
Enough to "do one's head in"! ;-)
Happy 98th Birthday
(September 2022) :
This is the base/background image created for a birthday card. It took 1hr 4mins to render 4,168 ray-traced iterations on a fast machine and was then imported into InDesign for final layout and to have extra words added before PDF'ing.
Old and New (September 2022) :
Surprisingly quick (2mins 55secs) render on an old machine. Just 229 ray-traced iterations.
Maligayang Kaarawan Veny
(Happy Birthday Veny)
(September 2022) :
Another A4-sized (400dpi original: 3,308 x 4,680 pixels) base / background image created for a Filipino birthday card. It took 29mins 13secs to render 393 ray-traced iterations on a fast machine (an older machine couldn't even START the render!) and was then imported into InDesign to have extra [personal] words added at the bottom before PDF'ing, prinnting and laminating.
We Are All Created Equal
(September 2022) :
These 18x faces took a huge rendering toll. When they were on their highest geometric sub-division resolution, even our most powerful machine couldn't cope. After 38 mins of "thinking" about it, the computer crashed with a memory error. Lowering all of the sub-division settings for each figure (including eyelashes and tears) allowed the render to proceed, but it still took 5hrs 52mins to process 8,452 ray-traced iterations. And for much of that time the CPU was 100% utilised, the GPU (see specs above) was constantly in the 97-100% range, with 30.3Gb of memory being used!
Remote Gazebo
(September 2022) :
The tricky part with this Scene was the "Geometry" work with the wrought-iron top... The render itself took 50mins 16secs to process 7,587 ray-traced iterations on a fast machine.
Happy 55th Birthday
(October 2022) :
An adaptation of the 3D base / background image created for the above 98th birthday card. This time, however, the "blurring" meant that it took 11hrs 55mins - to render 15,000 ray-traced iterations on a fast machine! 15K was the self-imposed limit, so it COULD have kept rendering for DAYS! As with the earlier version, this was then imported into InDesign for final layout and to have extra words added before PDF'ing and printing.
