3D Modelling - 13

Texting  (May 2019) :

Message on a dForce T-ShirtThis was an experiment in incorporating our own [typed] text into dForce cloth, whilst maintaining texture, curves and realism. Sounds simple, right?

Oh, and if you can't make out the text, it reads:

" ǝƃɐd ɹnoʎ oʇuo sIɥʇ ǝʇsɐd puɐ ʎdoɔ 'sʎɐs siɥʇ ʇɐɥʍ ʇno ǝɹnƃIɟ oʇ ɥƃnouǝ ʇɹɐɯs ǝɹɐ noʎ ɟI  "

( Yes, it IS possible to type the above on a standard keyboard!  YOUR job is to figure out HOW ! )

Woman in Red (May 2019) :

My Kingdom for a Ladder (May 2019) :

My Kingdom for a Ladder

How many Earthlings does it take to change a light-bulb?

Enlightenment (May 2019) : Enlightenment

What light through yonder window breaks?

Hand-Shadows (May 2019) :

Hand Shadows

"Inspired" by the multi-coloured shadows cast in the above "Enlightenment" image, the same three lights and gobo (window-frame) were used. The two original figures were removed, to be replaced by a single male figure, enlarged by 250%.

The figure's arms were raised and extended forwards, the elbows bent inwards to 90 degrees, the hands overlapping and palms facing the figure's head to form a simple bird-shape. The hands were placed in the path of the three lights and then the entire figure was made invisible except for the hands.

Hands 01

Hands 02

Hands 03

Hands 04

That's ONE pair of hands, with THREE different-coloured lights, through a window-frame gobo.

What seems like a very simple abstract is actually a three-bird silhouette which took several hours of "tweeking" before rendering.

Lighting and Cameras are very complicated aspects of 3D Modelling and take quite a while to master.

(Of course, one of the advantages of VIRTUAL 3D is that "solid" objects can occupy the same space, hence the hands here merge together.)

Green Acres (May 2019) :

Bride of the Invisible Man (June 2019) :
Bride of the Invisible Man

Concept design for the cover of a book of the same name.

A lot of tricky 3D model "finessing" went into this. Two extra sets of hands had to be created (and then made invisible) to cater to the two rings to "play nice" with the original 3D hand.

Of course, we could have gone a little bit further and also depicted the jacket and shift sleeve cuffs that the invisible Man would be wearing as he slipped the Wedding Ring over his bride's finger, but sometimes Life is too short!

Monkey Business (June 2019) :

Monkey Business

Another "proof-of-concept" for a similar project that, instead of a chimp and sandwich, would portray a clothes-wearing camel eating a giant hamburger!

Don't ask!!!

Beach Lady (June 2019) :

"Photo-realism" is often one of the goals for 3d Graphic Artists. It's also very hard to trick the Mark I Human Eyeball and brain into believing such!

This was an experiment using gravity-aware dForce clothing "material", High Dynamic Range Imagery (HDMI) & lighting and Depth of Field.

Beach Lady 1

The DOF in the above seemed a little overdone, so we moved along the same 3D beach abit, moved the sun and adjusted the DOF to create the following, in which the sun is actually a light source:

Beach Lady 2

Yeah, perhaps we could have brightened up the second version a little more? - But you know what it's like, shooting straight into the sun!

A Trilogy
(June - July 2019) :

Arlo Guthri, Jimi Hendrix,
      The Who, The Band,
            Janis Joplin,
Johnny Winter, Creedence Clearwater Revival,
      Jefferson Airplane,

            Ten Years After, Joan Baez,
         Santana, Joe Cocker,
Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, Grateful Dead,
      Blood Sweat and Tears,
            Sha Na Na...

These were just SOME of the 32 acts who performed outdoors at the "Aquarian Exposition" Music and Art Fair for "three days of peace and music" between 15th and 17th August 1969, at a dairy farm near White Lake in Bethel, New York.

Also called the "Bethel Rock Festival" and the "Aquarian Music Festival", it attracted close to half a million people who braved the often rainy conditions to change the history of Rock and Roll.

Although 43 miles from the town of the same name, the event is now simply referred to as

"Woodstock".

And so it comes to pass, half-a-century later, that young and old alike begin their pilgimmage across the United States and from all corners of the planet, intent on rekindling that special fire at "Woodstock 50"...

"The Gathering" begins:

Woodstock 1 of 3

Road-Trip:

     Version 1:

Woodstock 2 of 3

     Version 2:

Woodstock 2b of 3

And once they GET there, will it be everything they imagined?

The Reunion:

Woodstock 3 of 3

Note:

The ballroom scene turned out to be quite intense in terms of modelling and rendering. There were no shortcuts taken. Each one of the 16 individual people, for example, can stand alone as a very high-rez character with detailed eye reflections, skin blemishes, etc.  We never actually FULLY rendered any of the temporary scenes due to time constraints, so let them "time-out" after an arbitrary 100,000 seconds of GPU processiong!

Peace 2

Wrestling
(July 2019) :

This series of 3D renders is a little more personal...

WAY back around 1970, Geoff McIntosh,  was 16-17 years old, attending Kings College in Auckland, New Zealand.

As a result of having won a NZ Art Competition (most likely a pencil or Indian Ink sketch), Lufthansa Airlines contacted him.

They were sponsoring a world-wide competition for a special edition of postage stamps to be created. Each stamp was to depict a specific sport and one of the prizes was to attend the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.

Geoff STARTED by creating a series of A4-size pencil drawings depicting Wrestling, but University Entrance examinations loomed so he had to prioritise.

(Bear in mind that the stamps would have been very small, so intricate detail wasn't necessary, and Geoff intended to re-do them in Indian Ink before submitting.)

The faded pencil samples below are the only ones that remain, although some others existed, including some with Boxing themes.

It's only taken him 49 years, but he's finally "pulled-finger" and decided to make 3D versions of these three while he still has them!

PS: Sadly, the Munich Olympics are better-remembered for the massacre:

"The Munich massacre was an attack during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany, in which the Palestinian terrorist group Black September took eleven Israeli Olympic team members hostage and killed them along with a West German police officer."
